Message from the President: The Financial Services Industry Today

There's a lot of change taking place in the financial services industry today.  It seems like each day brings news of more banks that are closing branch offices to reduce overhead.  There's no question that fewer customers are coming into bank offices these days.  In just the past three years, volume in our lobbies has decreased by 25,000 visits annually in favor of online banking, mobile banking, ATMs, etc.

Unlike other financial services providers, however, it's not our intent to close any of our offices.  We think that real people and personal service need to remain the centerpiece of how we serve you for the foreseeable future. With that having been said, we also recognize the need to create more efficiency in our lobbies and drive-ups so that we can continue to serve your needs while reducing costs wherever possible.

Beginning in 2014, those customers who use our lobbies will see change as we add automated cash handling machines (recyclers) to eliminate the need for staff to count cash manually.  These recyclers both count the cash that you bring to the bank for deposit and dispense cash when you request cash back in a transaction.  You'll still be working with a customer service representative just as you always have but the cash handling function that they perform will now be automated.  We're doing this both to speed service to you and enable employees to handle more transactions in a given period of time.

The second phase of change in customer service operations comes in early spring as we replace drive-up units at all locations with new video kiosks.  Again, you'll continue to be served by a customer service representative but you'll see that person on screen, not standing in the drive-up window.  Coupled with these new video units, the tubes that carry transactions to the teller will be relocated directly behind the teller line in the lobby to reduce the running that too often takes place between lobby and drive-up windows.  

One of the big advantages of this two-way video, two-way communication between you and the customer service representative is increased privacy.  Because the customer service representative wears a headset, only he/she can hear you.  No more open mike that has the potential to be heard by others.

With this change there will no longer be a drawer in the first lane that slides out to accept your transaction.  The first lane will be used only for drive-up night depository and, perhaps, a drive-up ATM at some future date.  All drive-up transactions will be performed via tube beginning with the second lane in each location, the exception to this being our Plain office where the lane closest to the building will have a tube unit installed.

We remain committed to serving you with people.  With these changes you'll continue to see and interact with the same faces that you always have and you'll find them even closer to you - on screen and in your lane.

While technology increasingly optimizes our efficiencies and resources, personal relationships and interactions with people remain central to who we are as a financial institution.  We're an independent, community bank and steadfast in our plans to stay that way.


Community Food Drive Raises More Than $7,500

This year, our food drive was once again a great success thanks to everyone involved.  In total, we raised in excess of $7,500 and more than 853 pounds of food.
Since 2011, your contributions to this effort have helped us contribute more than $28,000 cash and 3,013 pounds of food for families and individuals in need of assistance within the local community.
"It was heartening to see the amount of customer and staff support for this effort, especially given current economic conditions" said Gary Harrop, bank president.  "We sincerely thank all those who participated to make this effort a success."
As an added incentive, those who contributed $5 or more in cash or 3 or more canned/dry goods were eligible for a $100 gift card drawing at each of our five locations.  Winners of the $100 gift cards were:

About the Local Food Pantries
There are food pantries in Arena, Barneveld, Mazomanie and Spring Green; and in several other communities within Iowa, Dane, and Sauk Counties.  All of the pantries are free and all disburse supplies to anyone in the community having need.  Use of the pantry by those in need is confidential.
